 Dear Art
Lovers and Collectors,
Happy Fourth of July and happy
summer! "California Gold" takes on new dimensions as our
late afternoons fill with rich luminousity, the
hills turn gorgeous shades of golden earth tones, and
the colors, scents and tangible vibrations of summer
fill the air.
At a time like this, wild horses
could not keep me away from the pleasures of plein-air!
The painting in this month's
sanctuary springs from such a recent
adventure at Elkhorn Slough, steeped in glorious summer
afternoon light.
Having recently experimented with
new and expanded concepts in color harmony,
Summer Sunset feels like a small victory
towards a next level of painting. This is one
of the most exciting (and at
times challenging) aspects of being an
artist -- every time you approach the easle, there
is the blank canvas, beckoning you to take chances and
to go where you have not gone before.
Experimenting, bringing a
"beginner's mind" and leaving behind the tried and
true can feel intimidating, yet also exhilarating
and full of adventure. New concepts take you
outside your comfort zone- and yes, feel
uncomfortable - yet also open up new horizons. Just
as in other areas of life, not every painting or
result may come out as you intended, yet the evolution
of who you are, as well as your abilities, take
flight....
Another plein-air painting
adventure this month was with my sister-in law Jennifer
Robin (pastel artist, image consultant & author -
yes, she's multi-talented!) to Halfmoon Bay,
California. We painted in what seemed like a
hurricane, with supplies flying all over the place,
and Jennifer's pastel painting leaping from the
easle and onto a passer-by!
The hazards of plein-air painting could
easily turn the hardiest souls into "complainer
painters"... I guess passion wins out over common sense
once more. Check out the painting that
resultet.
This month you can see some of my
paintings displayed at Karlene
Dahlmeier's gallery, along with other
artists. Works are also at Natural Selection and
York Gallery in
Santa Cruz.
Watch for announcements of upcoming
shows in August .
Looking forward to hear your news
and summer adventures... please stay in
touch.
Warmly,

Elkhorn Slough close to Moss Landing, California,
is one of the precious few wetlands left in our
state. Providing a nutrient rich mix of fresh and salt
waters this beautiful nature preserve is home to an abundance
of animal life such as egrets, herons, sea otters, seals and
countless fish. If you haven't been there -- ever or
recently -- take an invigorating hike, stroll along the
eco-friendly boardwalks, or kayak the luminous
waters.
Enjoy the glory of summer while it
lasts...
